The White Rose had its meager beginnings in the Corvallis, Oregon garage of co-owner Jim Somppi in September of 1983. Within a very short time Jim knew that he wanted to legitimize his business and moved into a retail store front location in Corvallis. When the lease was up on that space, this was also the time that Jim Schulte joined forces with The White Rose. Together they moved the business a few miles to the historic district of Downtown Albany, Oregon.
The White Rose has been in its present location since 1995. With over 2000 square feet, The White Rose is the areas largest retail florist. On a regular basis The White Rose can offer over 50 varieties of fresh flowers to its customers. As well, we have a large assortment of green and blooming plants, artificial and preserved floral wall pieces and arrangements, balloons and plush animals, and a full range of gift items. Another feature of The White Rose, we can put together custom gourmet and fruit baskets to your specifications.
Owners Jim Schulte and Jim Somppi (who are cousins) were both raised in the Mid-Willamette Valley. They are Linn County Pioneer descendants and are very proud of their heritage.
Jim Schulte grew up in Albany. At a very young age, Jim recognized the beauty of flowers. Jim's mother Ruby recalls when they would go for walks when Jim was a toddler. He would always comment on the "pretty flowers" in peoples yards.
Jim Somppi began flower arranging at the age of eleven. His father always has been a avid gardener. Jim wanted to learn more about the art of gardening and making things grow. He took the opportunity to join the Corvallis Junior Garden Club in the town of his upbringing. One month an adult leader of the club taught the group flower arranging. Jim picked it up quickly, entered his first flower show, and took home a third place ribbon. He was hooked from that point on.
Both Jims have always enjoyed floral work as a hobby and giving their work as gifts. They've turned their avocation into their true vocation. They are also both gardeners, and although it is work (after work) they both find it relaxing. Quite often they find themselves comparing notes between their two gardens. Over many year in business they have entered floral competitions, including the Oregon State Fair, where they have received numerous awards.
They are very active in their industry, conducting seminars and serving on various industry related committees. In addtion they have been on the Staff of Linn Benton Community College for the past 12 years as instructors in Floral Design.
